AWS Cloud Services

The University has provisioned its own AWS landing zone, allowing the setup of AWS accounts for researchers based on a charge back model. Researchers can use AWS for both server hosting (VMs) and/or storage of data and leverage any of the services made available via AWS including Machine learning, speech recognition, image recognition to name a few. The AWS Cloud services are hosted in the Sydney region.

Researchers can access the AWS Web Console to provision and directly administer their account including VMs and storage. A myriad of Application Programming Interfaces (API’s) are also available from AWS. Researchers are responsible for any costs and ongoing charges incurred.

Use of this AWS environment requires a high degree of expertise and is not suitable for novice users. For researchers who are unfamiliar with AWS, RONIN provides an alternative for accessing AWS services which is much simpler to use.

  • Who can use AWS cloud services?

    Academic Staff

AWS Cloud Services can be utilised by Researchers for approved University of Adelaide research data processing.

    HDR Students

Higher Degree Research Students can utilise AWS Cloud Services under the approval and supervision of their supervisor.

    Teaching Purposes (students)

There may be situations where a student needs to use VMs to process large data sets for their university learning. This should be planned and approved by the relevant academic staff and the costs incorporated into the teaching program.

For teaching purposes, it is recommended that RONIN be used rather than AWS Cloud Services as it allows users to easily and quickly spin up a VM environment in a more cost effective and timely manner where VMs are only required for a short period of time and will be shut down when they are no longer required.

Costs for RONIN or AWS Cloud Services need to be included in school/faculty budgets as usage is charged directly to the relevant school or faculty. Visit the RONIN page for more information.
